Lucas Pavan (2013 & 2015, Canada)
My name is Lucas Pavan and I worked with Jenny in Manu during the summer of 2013. Being part of this project was probably one of the most amazing things I have done with my life because of a number of reasons. First of all, the field work takes place in a fantastic part of this planet with big mountains, cloud forests, and hundreds of tropical bird species. The project work itself was also really stimulating; it will give you a proper taste of what field work is like in tropical ecosystems as well as give you the chance to see some pretty amazing hummingbird species up close. From a student and career standpoint I think that this project was a big step forward for me. As I said before it gave me a chance to really experience tropical field work but it also gave me the chance to test out experimental ideas and I think that my scientific ability has greatly improved because of that. The last reason that that summer was so amazing for me was because of the people that I was with. Jenny is really easy-going and really easy to talk to which makes her a great person to live and work with. She is a talented biologist and excellent at being somebody that you can talk ideas over with. I will give you a word of warning though: if you ever play soccer with her she will break your shins. Nicole LaRoche (2014, USA)
My name is Nicole LaRoche and I worked with Jenny in the summer of 2014. The field site at Wayqecha adjacent to Manu National Park is a great place to spend a few months. We worked most of the daylight hours catching and pretending to be birds. We got to catch and tag several hummingbird and diglossa species, all of which were new species to me. I didn’t have any bird handling experience before taking this position and so all mist-netting was new to me. I learned a lot about handling birds (and how to accidently let them go, too!) and about the species in the Manu cloud forest. Jenny did a fantastic job of choosing people because we all got along well and had a blast for the summer. We spent many hours laughing, playing cards, and enjoying the remote forest setting.
